Birthstones by Month: Meanings, History & Gift Ideas for Birthdays and New Moms

Every month has its own birthstone: garnet for January, diamond for April, sapphire for September. The tradition goes back to the 12 stones of the High Priest's breastplate in the Book of Exodus. Today, a birthstone is one of the most personal gifts you can give, for a birthday, a new baby or a push present. It says: I thought about you.

Where do birthstones come from?

Birthstones began in the Bible. Aaron's breastplate held 12 gemstones in four rows of three, one for each of the 12 tribes of Israel (Exodus 28).

In the first century, the historian Josephus linked those 12 stones to the 12 months and the 12 zodiac signs. Centuries later, in 1912, the American National Association of Jewelers published the first official birthstone list. It has been updated since: tanzanite joined December in 2002, and spinel joined August in 2016.

We work in the Diamond Exchange District in Ramat Gan, Israel, a short drive from where that story began. As a third-generation diamond family, we grew up hearing that a gemstone is never just a color. It carries thousands of years of meaning, and that is what makes it worth giving.

What does each birthstone mean?

Each birthstone has its own traditional meaning. Here is the full guide, month by month:

Do gemstones really carry energy?

People have believed in the energy of gemstones for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst to keep a clear head. Sailors carried aquamarine for safe passage. Ancient Egyptians called peridot "the gem of the sun."

Science doesn't show that stones have healing powers. But the meaning is very real: it lives in the intention of the person giving it, and in the memory the stone holds. A ring set with your child's birthstone is something you can touch every day. That's the kind of energy we believe in.

Why a birthstone makes a meaningful push present

A push present is a gift for a new mom, marking the moment everything changed. Choosing the baby's birthstone makes it personal. Born in September? A deep blue sapphire. Born in November? A warm golden citrine.

A few ideas we love in the studio:

  • A dainty single-stone ring for your first child, with room to add stacking rings for each one after.
  • A family ring with one stone for each child, or for the whole family.
  • A pairing with your wedding band: a small birthstone ring stacked next to a 14K gold leaf band, like a flower growing on a branch.

How do you choose a birthstone gift?

Start with the birth month and find the stone in the chart. Then keep these tips in mind:

  1. Some months have more than one stone. June, August, October, November and December all have options. Choose the color she loves.
  2. Think about her lifestyle. Pearl and opal are softer. For an everyday ring, sapphire, ruby and diamond are the most durable.
  3. Yellow gold flatters almost every stone. It warms the blue of a sapphire and deepens the green of an emerald.
  4. Look for character. The clearest stone isn't always the most special. Sometimes inclusions and color variations are what make a stone truly hers.

April birthday? Consider a salt and pepper diamond

April's birthstone is the diamond. If you want one that looks like no one else's, a salt and pepper diamond is it. It's a natural diamond with dark specks and silvery clouds inside, so every stone looks completely different. We're one of the few studios in Israel with a full salt and pepper diamond collection.
